The game can be simply described as a general set of two-players in which each one of them can adopt two actions or choices: cooperate or defect, to obtain a final payoff that depends on their choice and on what the opponent decides to do. The payoffs in the matrix represent time lost in terms of years in prison. The term cooperate refers to staying silent. The term defect refers to confessing and agreeing to testify, and so breaking the (implicit) agreement with the other player.
